If you're gonna do time travel, at least do it right.

How Long Will I Love U was so silly and funny and silly and nice and sweet and funny and a bit crazy and a bit ridiculous and funny and nice and cute.
The two leads are so fantastic together. On their first introduction, as separate people, I found them very unconvincing, but from the moment they were thrown together, I loved it. Gave me Love Off in a Puff vibes, but with the silliness dialled up to eleven.
The CGI isn't the best of seen, but it doesn't really make the film any worse by being a bit lame in places.
The ending was perfect.
The credits videos are absolutely adorable, I wish we'd had subs for that part too.
Overall, I had a lot of fun and I had a smile on my face at the end which is always a bonus.

This was a very sweet, goofy Chinese sci fi rom com. Good for a Saturday matinee. The stars were extremely cute. But I’m a big wimp, and when it got emotional and the sad ballad kicked in, I tried real hard to not cry and couldn’t do it, whimperedloud like a sad animal, and the couple sitting near me turned and looked at me. It was good.

One of those rom-coms with a bit of a time-travel edge to it. Tong Liya and Lei Jiayin start as a bit of hard work when they're introduced but slowly and surely become an irresistible pair whom you root for. Some more edges and turns make the plot itself more interesting and engaging too and with the aid of some nice, creative visual flourishes, what one ends up with is a very pleasant surprise and one entertaining movie experience. One of the highlights of the year so far.

He's an aloof, erratic real estate prospector living in 1999. She's a formerly wealthy debutante desperately trying to marry rich in 2018. They're in the same apartment... 18 years apart. An inter dimensional spacetime convergence pushes them together. Now they're stuck with each other. Sorry, I could only synopsize this like a narrator for a 1990's movie trailer.
How Long Will I Love U has a couple of things going for it. One is that it's pretty fucking cute all the time. Two is that the production design is exquisite. The sequence where the two apartments mesh is super cool. His place is dingy and sparse and hers is ultra beautified and girly. They sort of fold over each other…

I've always felt that the American rom-com was, if not quite classist, exclusionary by nature. If it's not a Hallmark fetishization of working-class masculinity and conservative values, it's pretty much always two wealthy, white, heterosexual people with cushy careers in New York, and the extent of their hand-wringing is typically "your studio apartment or mine?" Rarely do they have to consider their financial situations or, say, the fabric of their space-time. So it's super refreshing to see a rom-com that's not only steeped in class division/struggle but also in the rapid metamorphosis of China, its past, present, and future. Deeply intelligent and earnest movie. Could you imagine being caught in a love triangle with the past and future versions of someone? Me neither! Cried.

I’d summarise How Long Will I Love U as an expert at not ever hitting quite the right note.
For a good part of the film, the characters are selfish, deceitful and gullible. “It’s a joke”, yes, but what it isn’t is funny behaviour, yet instead it’s always apparently good cause to make them act more stupidly towards the situation—which by itself might already not be helpful. I thought the houses shared timelines but they merge physically too—way to make it harder to explain the phenomenon reasonably!
In general, the story tends not to produce a lot from what it’s got.
At first I was a bit surprised that the typical lottery number trick wasn’t used (not that I missed… -

"How Long Will I Love U" é um adorável filme chinês que combina os gêneros de comédia romântica e ficção científica.
