[modem/router] Noticing a pattern... Net connectivity drops inte - Verizon DSL (2024)

I don't seem to be the only one having this prob, which makes me feel a bit better. Net drops a few times a night. DSL light on Westell 7500 stays lit. Internet light goes out.

Status says "connection pending."

Verizon tells me to cycle power on modem -- a solution I find unacceptable.

Xcvr status -- seems the same up or down:

If I wait 5 or 10 minutes, it comes back. Typically, with a new IP address.

Wiring seems physically clean - I ran a new shielded cat 3 from the nid to the modem, and placed a single filter on the rest of the house at the demarc -- I work on phone systems for a living and know enough to be dangerous.

Any ideas?

Adding some info...

Looking at OpenDNS's IP changelog, today for example, I've had 6 different IPs between 3am and 7am.

Seems excessive.

On the plus side, I've taught my wife to reboot from the browser to save me a trip to modem each time.

Now, I'm no expert, but that looks odd.

Unfortunately, my wife rebooted the modem as I was digging for more info. Guess I shouldn't have taught her that trick.

The DSL light did indeed drop momentarily on this one. No correspondence to phones ringing or anything. Next step is to isolate EVERYTHING from the modem...

No NID, just an old arrestor -- but I'll disconnect everything else, hang a jack directly from it, and report back.

11.6 to 13.1 ... Assuming higher s/n is better, 50% more signal? Wonder if I had a loose/oxidized connection and all my shuffling cleaned it up?

For some reason, my gut tells me it won't make a difference.

Nope. Voice is clean. Perhaps a -tiny- 60hz hum, but I have to break dialtone, cover one ear, and strain to hear it. I've heard worse.

My next step is to replace the old primary arrestor with a new gas tube one and see what happens.

If I'm connected to the CO I assume I am, I can just about spit on it - can't be more than 3000' away from me, as the crow flies.

Well you've found what was up with the DSL . Those stats are plenty good for 7.1Mbps + FastPath should you be wondering about that too. Report back how everything goes!

You may also be coming out of a Remote Terminal (typically a small box or even a small building with telephone equipment in it) if you can't find the CO anywhere.
