A few weeks ago, I had some leftover wonton wrappers and no real plans for them.

I’d been re-shooting my Gyoza Recipe, and had the wrappers on hand for one of the options.

I also had some extra cream cheese, some fantastic green onions from the farmers market, and a craving for Chinese takeout.

Between not being big on deep-fried food, and not being super into the room temp, kinda soggy food that we’ve ended up from deliveries recently, I knew what I had to do.

... figure out if we could use the air fryer to make cream cheese wontons.

Spoiler: Absolutely!

These turned out fantastic, and have been a go-to quick snack ever since. Well, until we ran out of wonton wrappers, anyway!

Figured it’s about time I share the recipe!

Equipment for Air Fryer Cream Cheese Wontons

Air Fryer

Back in the early days of these ... interesting ... times, we decided to buy an Air Fryer. I hadn't looked into them, neither one of us did a ton of research, to be honest.

The Instant Vortex 4-in-1 Air Fryer, 6 Quart by Instant Pot is the Air Fryer we purchased, and we love it!*

We have always like the texture of deep fried foods, but not all that grease - it's wild how much this replicates actual deep fried texture when it comes to things like wings, chicken fingers, and fries.

... and, as it turns out... cream cheese wontons!

* If I had my time back, I may have ordered this one - a size bigger - but again... we had no idea how much we'd use it, so we weren't really willing to pay more or sacrifice more counter space for it!

Oil Sprayer

This isn’t a necessity, but it’s definitely a nice-to-have thing.

I always have canisters of olive oil spray and avacado oil spray on hand. They come in handy, and either one would work fine for this recipe.

The thing is, sesame oil just tastes BETTER with this recipe.

I haven’t been able to find a pre-filled spray canister of sesame oil, and brushing it on takes forever.

The solution? Oil spray bottles!

I bought this Oil Sprayer Set, and it totally did the trick!

They come in all kinds of different styles and brands, though - be sure to check them out! It’s a great way to save a bit of effort AND expand the possibilities in your kitchen!

How to Make Air Fryer Cream Cheese Wontons

The actual recipe follows - at the end of this post - but here is a pictorial overview with extra tips and information!

Prepare Your Filling

I rough chop the green onions to make them easier to measure - and I PACK the measuring cup. I do this, knowing I'm going to finely chop them in my food processor.

If you're mixing by hand, you should definitely chop them finer than pictured here!

In a small bowl - or mini food processor - beat together the cream cheese, green onions, and garlic powder. Season with salt and pepper, to taste.

Fill and Fold Your Wontons

On a clean work surface, lay out some wonton wrappers - I like to do these assembly-line style in batches.

Use a pastry brush to wet the edges of each wonton wrapper.

Note: If doing the ‘Takeout Style’ fold - see below - just put a drop in the center of each side edge, rather than brushing each entire edge!

Place a heaping teaspoon worth of filling in the center of each wonton wrapper.

Fold up your wontons in whichever way you want. The 3 main ways we do it:

Triangles

Fold one corner over the filling, meeting up with the corner diagonally across from it.

Seal the edges together, pressing out excess air as you go.

Takeout Style

Holding the middle of one side, bring it across to meet the middle of the side from across it.

Bring in the middle of both of the two remaining sides, pinching everything together to secure in the center.

You can flare the corners out to make them more pretty, if you like.

Pyramids

There are two different ways that I fold the triangles:

Corners First

Pull two opposing corners up over the filling, tips together.

Bring the remaining 2 opposing corners in, meeting all the corners together.

Along each side of the pyramid, press the edges together to seal, while pressing the wonton downwards - slightly - to get rid of excess air.

All-In-One

For this one, I hold a wonton in one hand, then use both hands to fold the corner points inward.

Remember those old folded paper fortune game things in school? Similar motion.

Once the corners are all in the center, I press them together, then seal each new side, same as the other pyramid step. Again, be sure to get the excess air out!

Prepare and Air Fry Your Wontons

Preheat your Air Fryer.

Spray a light coating of oil over all the wontons, add to air fryer basket. Be sure to leave a fair amount of space between each wonton.

Personally, I use one of the Oil Sprayers full of sesame oil to spray over all of them, then go over with a store-bought olive oil spray, which coats them all with a finer mist.

Cook for 10 minutes.

Check the wontons for doneness - you can put them back in for a minute or two, if needed.

Serve hot, with your choice of dipping sauce.
